When the Moors landed on the Southern tip of Andalucía in the year 711 they would not have dreamt that they would dominate the Iberian Peninsular for the next eight centuries. Looking across the valley fromAlmuña along a line of mountains you see the Frontier of Berber fortified villages fought over for the final 200 hundred years of Muslim rule.

Throughout the week we will be accompanied by Hugh and Jane and professor Michael Brett, Emeritus Reader in History, recently retired from theprestigious School of Oriental and African Studies where he specialised in Islamic history. Michael will bring to life this fascinating period of highly topical history with a series of illustrated talks at Almuña and accompany us to Medinat Al-Zahra and Cordoba, where it all started, and Granada, where it ended in defeat at the hands of the ‘Reyes Catolicas’ in 1492.

We shall also explore a number of the Moorish frontier citadels. 4 nights will be spent atAlmuña, one night in a comfortable hotel next to great Mosque of Cordoba and 2 nights at a private hotel belonging to Spanish friends of the Arbuthnotts in the old quarter of Granada with superb views of the Alhambra.
